On November 7, 2021, my son Dan and I ran the 50th New York City Marathon! It was my third (second NYC) and his first official marathon. He had previously run 26.2 miles alone on his 18th birthday in 2020, but this was a different experience! I was so glad we were able to do it together and I was thrilled I could keep up with him the entire five boroughs. To his credit and my everlasting gratitude, he could have run faster, but decided to stay with me so we could finish together. What a sweetheart!

Graduation!

Dan graduated high school last night!  It was a lovely ceremony and we were happy to have it take place after this past year.  He will be attending Virginia Commonwealth University to study mechanical engineering.
He decided to take advantage of their summer session, so he will be flying the nest in July.  He also found out yesterday that he was accepted into the "Emerging Leaders Program," which is a group of 44 (out of a freshman class of 3,000+) who take a couple of extra classes together and work on a project throughout the year to benefit the community.  They will also live together in the dorm that he wanted!  It will be a great opportunity to meet people and give back as well.  I'm really excited for him.

My ski & snowboard friends will understand the agony of this decision and my Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival gentlefolk may recognize a line or two...

Come Dance with Me!

This time last year, Tom and I were busy rehearsing for the Big Dance Recital at Mercy.  Graduates are invited to dance with a parent or family member.  His dance teacher, Vicki McHale, is brilliant at getting so much out of the students.  (She does the best she can with the parents as well.)  Enjoy!

I want to be a part of it!  New York New York! Marathon 2019

The 49th annual New York City Marathon took place yesterday, November 3, 2019, and I was one of 54,000+ participants.  After months of preparation, training, and fundraising, I could hardly believe it when the date actually arrived.  Now that it's over, whatever will I obsess about?!  I'm sure I'll find something...

Thursday, I went into the city to attend the Expo, get my bib, and of course, take lots of pictures.  I was tempted to purchase "finisher" shirts, but didn't want to jinx myself.  I ate an apple while posing in front of the medal and found my name.

Super Shredders

11/24/2017

A "Spartan" is not only a member of a warrior society from ancient Greece, but also an obstacle course race, of varying distances.  Obstacles include upper body challenges, carrying buckets of rocks or sandbags up and down hills, throwing spears, climbing ropes, scrambling over walls and hurdles, and many more.  A Sprint is about 5 miles, a Super 8, and a Beast 13.  All three in the same year are a Trifecta.  If you can't do an obstacle, you have to perform 30 "burpees," a hellish combination of squat, push-up, and jump.  Burpees are not fun.  But the races are a blast!

Our team of Blue Mountain ski and snowboard instructors, “Shredders,” formed last spring to cross off a bucket list item and do a Sprint at our home mountain in Palmerton.  Fast forward a few months and we’re looking to do a Trifecta in 2018!  After worrying about the Sprint all summer (in one week it will be over, in 48 hours it will be over) I didn’t want the race to end!  Signing up for the Super November 4 at Mountain Creek, New Jersey was a no-brainer and 5 of us (left to right:  Jennifer, Meghan, Sheri, Sharon & Stefanie) decided to go for it.

Instructor Profile #10:  Joel Sager

Joel with his ski/snowboard lesson notebook he has kept for 40+ years!
From Broadway to Blue Mountain, instructor Joel Sager has “beaten the odds” a few times in his life, beginning with his birth!   He is 12 minutes older than his identical twin, Gene.  Twins were not common the year he was born and identicals were rarer still.

Starting his skiing career in Michigan in the 1960’s, Joel lied about his age and joined the ski patrol at 17.  At that time, lift tickets were 50¢ and a season pass was $12.
